Introduction
For my Free Inquiry Project, I’m diving into a topic I’m incredibly excited about: How can virtual reality (VR) and gamification enhance engagement and knowledge retention in online learning — and even improve real-world sports skills? Not only will I explore VR and gamification tools more broadly, but I’ll also run my own personal experiment. I’ll train and practice cricket using IB Cricket, a VR cricket simulator, and track how it impacts my skill, confidence, and game understanding over four weeks.
This project blends research, hands-on experience, and personal reflection. I’ll use distributed and open learning technologies including open-access research, online platforms, VR tools, and online communities to deepen my understanding.
My 3-Week Plan
Week 1: Define and Explore
- Clarify my central question: Can VR and gamified learning improve engagement, memory retention, and skill development, both in general education and sports?
- Gather initial resources:
- Research on VR in education
- Research on gamification and learning
- Explore open-access articles, case studies, and tools
- Identify platforms I’ll explore (Duolingo, Kahoot, ClassVR) and plan my IB Cricket experiment.
Week 2: Hands-on Exploration
- Try general VR education demos (if available) + explore gamified apps
- Begin IB Cricket sessions and track:
- My engagement and focus
- How quickly I pick up new tactics or movements
- How immersive, game-based practice compares to real-life cricket drills
Week 3: Synthesize and Reflect
- Summarize the journey in my main Free Inquiry Project post:
- Key findings from research
- Insights from my personal IB Cricket experiment
- How distributed/open learning tools supported (or challenged) my exploration
This project excites me because it blends my love for learning, curiosity about educational technologies, and passion for cricket. I want to see if these tools can truly improve how we learn not just in school, but in the sports and hobbies we care about. I chose cricket because it’s summer, I love being outdoors, and I’ve always had a passion for sports. It feels like the perfect time to combine technology and play in a way that keeps me active and curious. If you have tips, tools, or experiences to share, feel free to reach out. I’d love to hear from you!
